TIPS TO CHOOSING THE RIGHT CAREER FOR YOURSELF

May 16, 2018 by Shaznay Logan

There are few life decision that are more important than choosing a career for yourself. Bar a career change or a leap into entrepreneurship, you are stuck in your career until retirement.

It therefore behooves you to put some time and thought before making a decision so you go into a career that suits you best, is rewarding and also fulfilling. You don’t want to get stuck in a wrong career for the rest of your life.

While remuneration plays a significant role in your career satisfaction, do not base your decision entirely on it when choosing a career.

Here are the tips to choosing the right career.

Life goals

Your priorities and goals in life should guide you to the right career. Choose a career that makes it easier for you to achieve your life goals.

For instance, if you want to travel the world then choose a career that involves a lot of travelling like or which pays good enough such that you can afford to travel at your own cost.

Similarly, if you want to impact and change other people’s lives, then choose a career like medicine or social work that gives you such opportunities to fulfil your desires.

Education background

Skilled labour requires a certain level of education. The easiest career path to follow is the course you studied in college. You already have the knowledge and skills needed to excel in the field.

It’s also okay if you don’t want to pursue whatever you majored in while in college in your career. You should however know that this may mean you having to go back to school or start your career as an intern so you can learn the ropes of your dream career.

For instance, you will have to attend Dental Assistant Schools America to pursue a career as a dental assistant.

Social and cultural fit

You can have the skills to excel in any career you want but you won’t fit in all careers. This is because different careers have different work environments which may not be suitable for your personality.

Since you will spend at least 8 hours at work daily, you should choose a career that fits your social needs otherwise you will strained and stressed at work.

This means that if you are an introvert, then choose careers that doesn’t involve a lot of social interactions. On the other hand, if you are an extrovert, choose a career that matches your need for social interaction.

Ask around

One way to find the right career is through trial and error but this is time consuming and also doesn’t reflect well on you resume when you don’t stay in a position for more than three months.

The better way to go about is to ask around. Connect with the people in the careers in your shortlist and find out everything you need to know about their work. This should include the requirements, and the good, the bad, and the ugly about the career.
