How to Get into a New Hobby as an Adult

September 25, 2020 by Shaznay Logan

While it is very easy to get into a hobby as a child, this is not the case when you are an adult as people tend to become more cautious and less likely to try new things. You certainly don’t have that reckless abandon, and you can easily start to feel stupid when you do something that you know you are not good at. Don’t despair; it is possible to get into a new hobby as an adult. Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

Remember What You Enjoyed as a Child

First of all, it is worth thinking back to your time as a child to remember what you enjoyed doing then. Perhaps you have a long-forgotten hobby that you could rediscover. After all, the things that you learn as a kid tend to stay with you for a significant length of time afterwards. If not, you can at least narrow it down to the types of activity you used to enjoy – whether this was physical exercise, something arty, or musical. While your tastes may have changed over time, there is also the chance that they haven’t moved on as far as you might have thought.

Use Your Friends for Inspiration

While some hobbies are solitary activities, there are plenty more that are enjoyable as part of a pair or a group. Look to your friends and family to see what kind of activities they engage in. Perhaps you could join in. It often helps to have a second person who is continually pushing you in the right direction. For example, a workout buddy can push you to hit your personal best.

Try Something Unusual

If none of the standard hobbies, such as sport, music, languages and so on, stand out to you, why not think outside the box to try an activity that is a little more unusual? For example, have you ever thought about panning for gold? Well, Irwin’s Paydirt gives you the opportunity to do just this. There are so many different niches out there that you can explore all sorts of different options until you settle on something that suits you perfectly.

Link Your Hobby to Your Career

If your hobby gives you the opportunity to further your career, it may give you that extra incentive to work even harder at it. Perhaps your office is about to open up a new international branch, so learning a new language becomes even more useful – especially if you are looking for an international transfer! It may be that your new hobby becomes your career, or at least a profitable side hustle.

Getting into a new hobby as an adult can prove to be more challenging than when you were a kid, but it is by no means impossible, and you may well find that it provides a new lease of life. While you may not find your dream hobby immediately, keep trying, and you are bound to find something to be passionate about.
